Matt Gontarek is the morning meteorologist for FOX5 News.
After graduating from Northern Illinois University in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Matt landed his first on-air job in Rapid City, South Dakota at KOTA. He was able to learn and gain firsthand experience through the powerful severe weather the Black Hills see throughout the seasons.
From there, Matt and his wife Francesca moved on to Eugene, Oregon. They thoroughly enjoyed the endless beauty of the Pacific Northwest from the mountains to the waterfalls. Matt would track textbook subtropical cyclones that would bring soaking rain and heavy snow to the Willamette Valley and to the Cascade mountains. Eugene is also where Matt and Francesca welcomed their beautiful first-born son in the summer of 2021.
Matt now joins FOX5 as the afternoon meteorologist and is thrilled to be living in the desert Southwest. He enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, watching movies, golfing, and cooking.

First alert changes in the forecast with cooler air dropping south into the viewing area this week. Highs will stall in the upper 50s and lower 60s through the upcoming weekend.

A cold storm dropping in from the north is bringing strong wind and the coldest air so far this season. A Wind Advisory will be in effect until midnight to 11 p.m. Friday with wind gusts up to 50 mph across the Las Vegas Valley.
With wind gusts expected to push to 40 mph in some locations, a Red Flag Warning will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Good morning, Wildfires burning in Southern California have continuously sent variable levels of smoke into our region, negatively impacting Southern Nevada’s air quality.
The strong wind and drier air that moved in Wednesday afternoon/evening has allowed us to cool down quite a bit this morning.
We’re waking up to thicker smoke near the valley floor and poor air quality across the eastern valley. You may smell smoke as you head out the door this morning.

Temperatures hold steady throughout the week with highs consistently hovering around the 105° mark.
After the coolest weather in more than two months over the weekend, temperatures are back into triple-digit territory this week.
