Family of man shot, killed by Las Vegas police demand officer's arrest
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - The family of the man shot and killed by Las Vegas police officers last week are demanding justice.
In a press conference Monday morning, the family of Brandon Durham, led by their attorneys Lee Merritt and Cannon Lambert, demanded the arrest and criminal indictment of Officer Alexander Bookman.
Last week, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department identified Bookman who fatally shot Durham while responding to a home invasion. In recently released body camera footage, Durham can be seen struggling with a home invader armed with a knife and asking for help.
Another officer can be heard demanding the suspect to drop the knife before Officer Bookman fires six times. The Clark County Coroner determined that Durham died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The accused home invader was also identified as Alejandra Boudreaux, who is facing charges of home invasion, assault, and possibly involuntary manslaughter. She was due in court Monday morning for an initial appearance but refused transport.
In response, a judge has ordered that Boudreaux be present at her next hearing on Monday, Nov. 25.
“Today, the suspect who entered the home illegally was supposed to be arraigned and refused to come down for arraignment, we appreciate the court issuing an order that the suspect be brought to court by any means necessary in a week’s time,” shared Merritt. “We will be here with the Durham family at the subsequent meeting next week to ensure that the criminal process goes forward.”
According to Merritt, the family spoke with District Attorney Steve Wolfson before the conference to ask for justice in both cases.
“We were able to speak with the prosecutors involved in both cases, both of the suspect and the officer-involved shooting, and we are looking forward to criminal accountability on both sides,” Merritt said.
He also added that Wolfson has not ruled out the possibility of arresting the officer, but is currently not prepared to take action.
“We are definitely interested in partnering with the DA’s office. We are definitely interested in partnering with Metro, for the purposes of seeing justice done. And to the extent that charges are able to be brought by the DA’s office against the assailant who broke in,“ he said. ”But we do sort of struggle with [why] they can’t seem to be in that place right now as it relates to Officer Bookman.“
Wolfson issued a statement Monday afternoon in response, urging the public’s patience as the investigation continues. He also highlighted two ongoing investigations related to the shooting being conducted by LVMPD.
“There is an administrative review to determine what, if any, policies were violated and whether discipline should be imposed against any of the officers involved,” he said, in part. “There is [also] a contemporaneous criminal investigation to determine whether Metro will submit criminal charges against any officer involved in this matter.”
