Spending during spooky season expected to dip slightly in Nevada following upward trend
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Spending during the spooky season has been steadily climbing over the last decade and there are no signs of it slowing down. In 2019, a person spent $86.27 cents on average in Nevada. This year, Nevadans are expected to spend $103.63 on average.
According to the Retail Association of Nevada, $66.28 million was spent in 2010. A decade later, Nevadans are spending $92.12 million. For 2024, the RNA is projecting that $190 million will be spent.
Halloween is 17 days away and 72 percent of adults plan to celebrate Halloween while spending $189.9 million on costumes, candy and other supplies for the festivities this year. The RNA reports participants are projected to spend an average of $103.63 per person, slightly down from last year’s record of $108.24.
Nationally, the spending is forecast to reach $11.6 billion, marking the second-highest total on record, according to survey data from the National Retail Federation (NRF).
Costumes are still topping the consumer charts. $62.2 million is spent by Nevadans. But not far behind are decorations and candy, totaling $61.5 million and $58.1 million.
Sales boom during the Halloween season, particularly for candy. Reuters reports the price of chocolate is up 40% since 2020.
The RNA states that 37 percent of shoppers are planning to shop at discount retailers—the highest share among shopping destinations. Other popular stops for Halloween gear include specialty Halloween and costume stores (33 percent), online retailers (33 percent), grocery stores (28 percent) and department stores (22 percent).
In terms of finding the perfect costume, 38 percent are seeking inspiration online, 28 percent are browsing retail or costume shops, and 20 percent are consulting family and friends for ideas.
